Why Jalaway Belted Galloway Beef?

Friends and family have experienced the quality and exceptional flavour of our beef for years. Their wonderful responses encouraged us to share this secret with the wider community by selling the beef. We began this in 2013 and haven't looked back since!

The herd at Jalaway Belted Galloway Beef are bred from traditional lines and have all the eating quality that the breed is well known for. Our cattle are slow growing as it takes time to produce such magnificent meat. We process our animals between 2 and 3 years old as our herd have increased tenderness with age. We find that the beautiful and fine marbling is present at this age as well as delicious flavour.

Our herd is situated in West Gippsland at Willow Grove in Victoria. Jalaway is run and jointly managed by Ali Hilli and Neale Vorbach.

Why Belties?

The breed originated from Scotland in the Galloway district and is thought to be a combination of the Galloway Breed and the Dutch Lakenvelder (to produce the distinctive belt).

The Galloway District is an area of Scotland where the cattle had to cope with all the extremes that nature could throw at them. As a consequence these cattle are very hardy, excellent foragers and are able to thrive in marginal country on poorer pasture. Their double coat means that they are able to use the energy that they take in to produce outstanding beef and strong, hardy calves.

Our cows are all excellent mothers and will protect their calves against all comers. Some of our cow families even act as a midwife and look after another cow as she is calving. The high fertility and easy calving is an important bonus as we work away from farm. Coming home at night or waking in the morning to a healthy calf is always a welcome sight! It is a very rare event to need to pull a calf. In all our years of breeding, we have only ever had to assist two cows to deliver their calves. The first one had one leg right back so any cow would have had difficulty delivering him. The second one was a breech presentation again with one leg right back.
